How Your Car’s AC System Actually Works
Your car’s air conditioning isn’t just a fan. It’s a pressurized refrigerant system with several components that all have to work together:
- Compressor — pressurizes the refrigerant. This is the heart of the system and the most expensive component to replace.
- Condenser — releases heat from the refrigerant. Usually located in front of the radiator.
- Evaporator — absorbs heat from your cabin air, which is what actually makes the air feel cold.
- Expansion valve — controls how much refrigerant flows through the system.
- Refrigerant (Freon) — the fluid that moves heat out of your car. Over time, systems lose refrigerant through small leaks.
When any one of these fails, the whole system underperforms. The most common issue we see is low refrigerant due to a slow leak — which means the system works, just not well enough to keep up with the heat.
Signs Your AC Needs Service
- Blowing cool but not cold — most often a refrigerant issue
- Takes a long time to cool the cabin — could be refrigerant, could be a condenser issue
- Warm air only — compressor may not be engaging
- Strange smells when AC is running — mold or bacteria in the evaporator, or a burning smell from the compressor
- Unusual noises when AC is on — compressor bearing or clutch issue
- Water leaking inside the cabin — clogged drain line from the evaporator
Any of these symptoms means it’s time to bring it in. The earlier you catch an AC issue, the less likely it is to cascade into a compressor failure — which is a significantly more expensive repair.
